Overview

The Department of State has published the Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) series, the official documentary record of U.S. foreign policy, since 1861. From the administration of Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865) through parts of the administration of Ronald Reagan (1981-1989), more than 500 volumes have been published, totaling hundreds of thousands of pages that provide the text of important foreign policy documents. The National Archives says FRUS is the most important publication to consult when beginning research on U.S. foreign policy. This collection also includes the Secretaries of Defense Historical Series, covering 1947 to 1985. Note: because of the size of each volume, citations take time to load.
