Overview
The Department of State has published the Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) series, the official documentary record of U.S. foreign policy, since 1861. From the administration of Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865) through Jimmy Carter (1977-1980), more than 500 volumes have been published, totaling hundreds of thousands of pages that provide the text of important foreign policy documents. The National Archives says FRUS is the most important publication to consult when beginning research on U.S. foreign policy. Note: because of the size of this collection and the size of each volume, citations can take time to load. More precise queries also tend to provide more precise answers.
