Overview
In West Virginia v. BPJ, a transgender girl challenged a state law banning her from playing school sports; in Little v. Hecox, a transgender collegiate athlete challenged an Idaho law barring her from competing on her university's track team. The cases require the justices to consider whether state lawmakers can restrict gender identity in scholastic sports competitions, blocking transgender students born as biological males from competing in women's sports. After oral arguments in January 2026, court watchers largely concluded that most of the Court would likely uphold the existing bans.
