Meta's Child Safety Research

Buried research suggests Meta ignored child safety risks in VR.

Overview

This collection consists of internal Meta research records, employee declarations, and supporting evidence submitted anonymously to Congress in May 2025 and reported on by The Washington post in September 2025. Six current and former user-experience researchers alleged that Meta’s leadership and legal department systematically suppressed or altered safety research related to Facebook, Marketplace, Dating, and especially Reality Labs’ virtual reality products. The documents describe harms including child grooming, sexual harassment, racism, and exploitation within VR environments, and detail how proposed fixes were delayed, censored, or erased to protect engagement metrics and limit liability. Query these documents, totaling over 4,000 pages, now made public for the first time with Sourcebase. Also check out our previous collection, "Facebook Whistleblower Files" from Frances Haugen.
